At the wetlands more than 250 different species of birds live. It is a artificial freshwater lake of 5.972 acres, which is supplied with water from the springs of the Edessa River. Lake Agra has been designated by the Ministry of the Environment and Water as a site of special natural beauty and because many of the fauna species are rare or threatened, they are protected by national and community legislation. The wetlands and the surrounding area have been integrated into the network of Special Protection Areas under the Birds Directive. They have also been included in the areas proposed for inclusion in the European Network of Protected Areas NATURA 2000.
The flora of the lake is composed of hydrophytic vegetation, which grows on its surface by reed vegetation, while the fauna of the wetland consists of frogs, otters, myocastors, aquatic turtles and aphids. As far as the bird fauna of the lake is concerned, about 130 species of birds use it for nesting, wintering and reproduction. One of the four colonies of the moustache gull in Greece is the lake of Agra – Nissi – Vrytta and the most rare in our country black-haired gull. Other species of birds that visit it periodically are arachnids, swans, pelicans, halcyones, night ravens, nano-beetles, as well as many species of ducks.
Boat tours and bird watching sessions are organized. You can also navigate by car following the surrounding path of the lake using the road and trail network. Next to the lake there is a tourist booth with local cuisine and excellent trout.
