It is located in the centre of Pella prefecture and crosses the plain of Almopia. The river is created by dozens of streams and small rivers that originate from Kaimaktsalan, Pinovo, Tzena and Paiko mountains. The name of Moglenitsas stems from the Byzantine word Moglenas, referring to the wider semi-mountainous area of Almopia. Other names of the river are Almopaios, Ano Loudias, Meglenikos and Vistrika in Slavic.
The river features large amounts of water and in many places the riverbed and bank areas are wide in width. Many dirt roads start from the surrounding villages and reach beautiful stretches of the river. The ruins of the great ancient bridge, which is referred to as “the bridge of Alexander the Great” near Aloros and the wonderful riverside path leading to Krania stand out. The vegetation around the river is particularly dense and rich in species. On the banks of the river there are plantains, maples, linden trees, elves, willows, alders, etc. Higher in the hills there are dense oak tree forests. Around the river one can meet many beautiful and rare flowers such as the wild daffodil Dianthus deltoides deltoides, Colchicum confusum and C. bivonae, Ajuga chamaepitys, Lilium martagon lily, and much more.
Moglenitsas is considered a particularly important area for avifauna for two reasons. The river bed is a migratory corridor for birds that descend from northern Europe to the rivers and wetlands of central Greece, while many species nest in the tall trees and small islands.
